Men’ Fashion Going More Feminine by Stina Lundberg

  • The recent years the idéa of unisex has shown itself a lot on womenswear (especially in the fields of skate/streetwear)  But what about menswear?

I think there is a big difference if we look at men, how they dress now, how they are more into fashion in general, and also how the menswear fashion is developing towards  the female fashion. There is now an “awareness” when men feel more experimental, without the stereotype of “if you are into fashion as a man, you must be gay”.
For example; accessories are seen everywhere for men! Everything from bags, scarves, gloves, glasses, caps etc…How many men are walking around with a bag  now, compared to for 3-4 years ago? I think there’s a really big interest in men’s activities, and functions. Why wouldn’t men need a bag when we women do?

Then there is another thing, since it’s trendy with flowers and colors for all of us now, there are also flowers for men, maybe not yet, but for summer-09 I’m sure there’ll be quite a lot of men walking around in floral printed clothes. We’ll see..
Another thing not to forget, is that we start to mix material! We start mixing the types of material we’re wearing…Denim with silk, Velvet with a thin jersey cotton. There’s an experimental “shape-thing” going on (layers on layers etc..)”, as well as “fabric-mixing”. That is, we mix different styles and put them together, into a personal look, (ex: a blazer, a white shirt, with a pair of  baggy pants and sneakers. I’m sure you didn’t miss the same idéa a couple of years ago when men were wearing a blazer with a sweatshirt hoodie underneath..)

Not only are there flowers, and sheer materials for men as a feminine touch, but also a deep V-neck or U-neck, showing more and more skin. The fabrics are becoming softer, more smooth and transparent. Silk and viscose are blended with cotton, in t-shirts for men. Why wouldn’t they also appreciate a soft, comfortable material against the skin?

I find the tendences for next year are very generous in shape too. Men are comfortably dressed in clothes a bit oversized with a nice “relaxfeeling” into it.. A bit of the 80’s even the 90’s, with big printed T-shirts…maybe with a deep U-neck showing more skin than usual, in an elaborated soft smooth material..

The baggy style gives me an imagery of the “bros” and depache mode, these 2 pop groups style…:) I guess fashion is cyclical too…

I believe we will eventually get used to men having feminine looking wear. Things are so much changing that nothing surprises me anymore. From the pictures the clothes look good.

I believe that fashion for men is for good times only. With the crisis upon us, sad and grey will be the rule. Alas.

      Gabrielle,
I agree that with the financial crisis upon us, we will definetely be more limited “shoppingwise”… But that doesn’t stop our creativity..even more reasons to look through what you already have at home, and mix and match!

It’s about time we had a little “shake-up” in the mens fashion world.

I am so tired of seeing the same old-same old jeans with a t-shirt.

These pictures look great. I know my man will be wearing some new threads soon. Can’t wait to see them hit the stores!

      Thanks for sharing!

Interesting style. I’d never think male fashion would go this direction but who knows, nowadays markings are fading and the clothing men or women wear is no different. Then again, if a women looks good in boxers, I guess men can look good in some more traditionally female wear as well?

Interesting change, I guess if a woman can look good in boxers, why can’t a guy look good in this? Nice photoshopping of the guy on a rooftop though lol :o

Mens’ fashions do need to change drastically. I am a supporter of MEN IN SKIRTS. I also advocate the use of skorts for men and boys. Dresses are for crossdressers. I wear my skirts outside to the stores, to the parks and even to the library. I have never been accosted or denigrated for wearing them at any of the places I go. GUYS wake up, skirts/skorts add to your wardrobe not detract from it with wasted space. For example, Take a warm July day, you are dressed in a khaki pleated skirt, a light grey polo shirt, and either your socks and athletic shoes or sandals. You feel the air move around your legs reaching up onto your thighs. The comfort level is remarkable. The same cannot be said for wearing pants or even most shorts. Try it, it will not make you GAY or turn you into a flaming sissy. The previous will only occur if you want it. Just be yourself, carry on as if it is perfectly natural. You will find out, as I have, that people don’t care what you wear and are more accepting then most people think.
