Street Fashion in Barcelona by Stina Lundberg

  • I’ve been spending a couple of days in Barcelona, and I thought I’d share some of my impressions of this multi-national (and multi-cultural) city! Going there in January was of course a very calm and quiet period, perfect to be able to walk anywhere with no street being too crowded.

I stayed in “Ciutat Vella”, the old part of Barcelona, where the narrow streets are filledĀ  with interesting old buildings, with their balcony’s completely covered with green flowers hanging down, giving us a nice contrast to the coloureds house walls.

The bars and the restaurants are all different. Nothing looks the same.

This goes for the people to, nobody looks the same! The individual personality shows, and is quite amazing.. I find that in many big cities in Europe, this individuality is hard to find, when you are more or less used to seeing groups of people or friends, looking and dressing the same as everyone else…

To describe the Spanish fashion I’d say: street style!!

So nice and soft to see people walking around in comfortable sneakers, baggy or loose pants, or if wearing skirts, big and voluminous ones (still being worn with the comfy sneakers!)

I have seen few “makeup freaks”, (the ones I saw were probably not Spanish)and I must say that the natural looks are breath taking.

Lots of shops contains street/surf/skate gear, which also means that all of this exist for women to! Perfect. Unisex fashion in strong flashy colours. Maybe this is not my taste in clothes personally, but what a great big offer when it comes to sneakers! Excellent!

Looking in the display windows I’m struck by the huge hippie fever! Loose cotton pants, tuniques, blouses and skirts in lively colours, with flowers, and embroidered shapes. There are also bags, caps, hats, gloves and scarves. Everything is in soft material in earthy colour tones,

sometimes contrasted with a funky fushia, orange or a sharp green.

Also to mention is the African fabrics and decorations, that are seen from times to times in the older parts of the city.

What I like most about the Barcelona street fashion is their nonchalant way of dressing themselves..this really creates an ambiance of a cool, non superficial place to be. Where other things are more important than what we look like.

Now this may sound a bit strange since I have choose to work with fashion myself. But as I explained earlier, fashion is not only a superficial industry, but also important when it comes to expressing your personality, and especially to feel good about yourself. Not necessarily to look as everyone else..

Now with the aura of Barcelona all around me, I do absolutely recommend you to go there.

Just stroll around and see, feel, and get inspired by this high pulsed, young city, offering personal fashion, where you can look any way you wish to, and to enjoy sneakers and “loose fit” to the fullest!

I agree, it’s kind of the same vibes in London, which is great to…even though personally I got the impression that Barcelona is even more relaxed.
(In London you can somehow spot directly which ones have their “relaxed style” all figured out, according to the latest “vintage trend”..) But anyways, nice to see people in personal cool styles!
